Moved topic to the "Website" section of the forums so it does not confused with the gaming server stuff as they are 2 different servers.

Actually a forum rather than a website problem...

Clicking on the Chat Here link in the General Members area and nothing happened; after a few goes got this:

Quote:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: User wwwnaked_1 already has more than 'max_user_connections' active connections in /hermes/web05/b2708/moo.lolclownscom/public_html/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 48

Warning: mysql_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /hermes/web05/b2708/moo.lolclownscom/public_html/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 330

Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /hermes/web05/b2708/moo.lolclownscom/public_html/forum/db/mysql4.php on line 331
phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

...all fine again after that...

Not sure if that is something local to me, but thought I would mention it...

It's saying that we're swamping the database with connections. The database server maximum connections is set to 1,228, which you would think would be enough. There is a MySQL setting max_user_connections which is set to 10, which doesn't seem enough. We should ask FatCow to increase this to 100, if they would, or if they can advise us on "connection pooling" from PHP, which is another option.

This also happened occaisionally when the site was still on 23's server. My gut feeling is that it is related to the resource problems narc described when it was on his server i.e. crappy old php2bb code.

Just asked FatCow to increase the max_user_connections value but they won't do it.

Edit: I have found some code I can add to the site to kill over-running MySQL processes which should stop the problem but the code itself uses mySQL connections and would have some impact on website performance so I'll put it in only if we keep getting this problem.

I always wondered how they could have unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth, they limit users to keep it down Smile

Lots of websites are using the same MySQL server so they limit the number of connections that each website can have open at once. Our very busy site at work has max_user_connections set to 1,000, but then we have a database server to ourselves.

BTW I think Anarchos worries about site performance were mainly due to the cron jobs that were running. I've just had a look at those and they were continually polling the game servers for the stats and writing the player info to the database. We haven't got that issue now because we can't poll the game servers because the ports are closed. It also means that we can't keep that nice player hours table that we used to have up to date Sad.

Connection pooing?

But there were only two cron scripts and each was run every five minutes. Is that really enough to saturate? The site still had too many mysql threads even after the cron jobs were disabled.
